Amma is live!

June 20, 2026 Maria Valles

The Amma Granny Square Top & Sweater crochet pattern is officially released and live on Ravelry and LoveCrafts!

Amma means “granny” in Icelandic and is a fitting name for this super simple top made from two granny squares. You can read all about the inspiration for this pattern here. Worked up in lace-weight Icelandic wool for a light feel and delicate look, it’s a great place to start for confident beginners making their first garment, and engaging enough for more experienced crocheters looking for an easy and satisfying make.

The pattern includes a sweater variation with options for three-quarter and long sleeves, and instructions for modifications to really make it your own. Basic shapes and simple construction work together to create a pleasingly pretty and highly wearable piece that you’ll keep reaching for.

The yarn featured in this design is Ístex Einband, a beautiful lace-weight Icelandic wool. It's light but also warm, just right for Iceland’s cool summers. If you plan to make this for warmer climates, you can easily substitute a different yarn in a similar weight.

This pattern comes in nine sizes to fit up to a 62 inch/157.5 cm chest with intended positive ease from 5.5-7.5 inches/14-19.5 cm. Note that this is a full written pattern, not a tutorial—while it uses beginner-friendly stitches and techniques, you should have an understanding of how to read a crochet pattern.

I’m so happy to have this pattern out in the world and I hope you like it!
