It’s been a very long while since Rove Handmade was relegated to the back burner because, well… life… but I’m at it once again and am excited to be bringing back the Amma Granny Square Top, better than before!
Amma, which means granny in Icelandic, started out as a basic “recipe” for a simple top made from two granny squares, published right here on the blog back in 2015.
I’d wanted to make something pretty, refined and wearable but also - and this is important - easy . And what could be easier than two granny squares put together or prettier than delicate lace-weight Icelandic wool? And so Amma was born.
Since I pressed “Publish” on that original blog post, Amma has garnered more than 10,000 favourites and nearly 500 projects on Ravelry, and continues to be one of my most popular designs.
For a long time, I’ve wanted to transform it into a “real” pattern, to make it more accessible and take some of the guesswork out. But the biggest challenge was making a single granny square work across an inclusive range of sizes without sacrificing the integrity of the original design. A few years and a few iterations later, the result is a fully graded pattern in nine sizes with an added sweater version that includes options for three-quarter and long sleeves.
Testing is currently underway and I can’t wait to share more! Check out Rove Handmade on Instagram for some tester sneak peeks. And to stay in the loop, be sure to sign up for the newsletter ;)
