Why Are so many of your designs in Icelandic wool?
Icelandic wool, known as lopi, is a wonderful natural and sustainable yarn whose unique fibres - long, glossy outer fibres and shorter, insulating inner fibres - combine to create a yarn that is warm, lightweight and water-resistant. Beautiful patterns to knit in Icelandic wool abound, including the famous lopapeysa (traditional Icelandic wool sweaters) that the country is famous for, but for us crocheters the choice has always been more limited. I would love to inspire crocheters around the world to create your own lopi garments and accessories by designing simple, stylish and wearable patterns that showcase these versatile yarns.
Do I have to use Icelandic wool?
Rove Handmade patterns are designed to highlight the characteristics of Icelandic wool, but you can of course substitute a different yarn. All patterns include notes on suggested substitutions - just be sure to do a swatch in your chosen yarn to make sure you’re getting the right gauge, and note that using a different yarn may affect the weight and drape of the finished piece. A good resource for yarn substitutions can be found at www.yarnsub.com.
