pattern FAQ

Why Are so many of your designs in Icelandic wool?

First and foremost, I use Icelandic wool because I live in Iceland and it’s a local, natural, sustainable, known-source fibre, so it just makes sense. Secondly, I really do love it - Icelandic wool, known as lopi, is a wonderful yarn whose unique fibres - long, glossy outer fibres and shorter, insulating inner fibres - combine to create a yarn that is warm, lightweight and water-resistant. Beautiful patterns to knit in Icelandic wool abound, including the famous lopapeysa (traditional Icelandic wool sweaters) that the country is famous for, but for us crocheters the choice has always been more limited. I hope to inspire crocheters around the world to create your own lopi garments and accessories by designing simple, stylish and wearable patterns that showcase these versatile yarns.

Do I have to use Icelandic wool?

Not at all! Rove Handmade patterns include notes on yarn weight, gauge, and suggested substitutions so you can select a yarn that works for you - just be sure to do a swatch in your chosen yarn to make sure it’s suitable, and note that using a different yarn may affect the weight and drape of the finished piece. A good resource for yarn substitutions can be found at www.yarnsub.com.
